Q&A with Mr. Len about the SUBPAC:

What role does “feeling” play in the music you make and love?
Feeling the bass makes the vibe tangible. It brings me back to when I was younger and would stand near a subwoofer to feel the music that was being played.  

Has the SUBPAC changed the way you create, produce or mix music?
It absolutely has. I’m more in control of the sub level of bass that sometimes gets lost in studio monitors. It allows me to add to the dynamics of a song in a way that can directly touch the listener.

How could “physical audio” change our relationship to sound and music in the future?
This is absolute immersion into music. Panning sounds in stereo mixes gives the listener a sense of space, now adding vibration to that space makes it more of an experience.

What excited you about the Feel SUBPAC project?
What excites me most is being able to create a narrative through instrumentals. Or being able to just beat the listener up with a classic BOOM BAP style. It opens up the imagination of both the creator and lover of the creation.

About Mr. Len:

Mr. Len (Leonard “Lenny” Smythe) is a hip hop DJ born in the Bronx, New York. He grew up in Hillside, NJ. He was a member, with Bigg Jus and El-P, of the underground hip hop trio Company Flow, which disbanded in the late 1990s. His debut full-length, released on Matador Records in 2001, included guest spots by Jean Grae, Chubb Rock, and Mr. Live.[2] Later he formed a group with Kimani Rogers from The Masterminds named Roosevelt Franklin. He also collaborated with Handsome Boy Modeling School member Prince Paul to produce the faux-doo wop group The Dix.
